What Is Spokeo?

Spokeo is a US people-search service. It collects information from public records, online profiles and other sources, then puts possible matches into reports you can explore. You can start with a name, phone number, email address or street address.

The information itself isn't necessarily exclusive. You can find some addresses, property details and online profiles for free. What I liked was having several details in one place when I wasn't sure where to start. The drawback is that a neat report can make old information look more convincing than it deserves.

Name, phone and address searches focus on US records. Spokeo also says its email and username searches can return profiles outside the US, although that doesn't make it a worldwide people-search service. And it's not a consumer reporting agency for employment, housing, credit or insurance decisions.

How Spokeo Works

Choose the type of search and enter what you know. Spokeo returns possible matches, and you narrow them down using details such as location, age and relatives before opening the available report.

The first results appeared quickly when I used the website. That helped, but I still needed to work out which record belonged to which person. If all I had was a common name, I could get several plausible matches. An old city, approximate age or familiar relative made things much easier.

I also wouldn't confuse a reverse phone lookup with live caller identification. Spokeo can show information previously associated with a number. It can't tell you for certain who was holding the phone or who sent a message, especially when numbers can be reassigned or spoofed.

Key Features

The four search options were the main reason I kept trying Spokeo with different details. I didn't find every one equally useful, and the best results were usually the ones where I already knew enough to check the match.

People Search

This was where Spokeo worked best for me. I was trying to reconnect with a college friend and had an old name and the city I'd known them in. The first match wasn't something I could simply accept, but the age and relatives helped me narrow it down. The report gave me contact information and possible social profiles, and an email exchange confirmed I'd found the right person.

I was pleased with that result. Without the extra details, I could have spent much longer searching individual profiles and trying to work out whether I had the right person. But the success came from comparing information I recognised, not from Spokeo magically knowing who I meant.

Other searches were less successful. Some contact details were old or incomplete, and a report with plenty of entries didn't always contain the one thing I needed. I wouldn't pay for Spokeo expecting every search to end like the college-friend one.

Reverse Phone Lookup

One of the more useful searches came after an unfamiliar text asking if I wanted to sell my house. I looked up the number and found information associating it with an out-of-state VoIP line, along with telemarketing comments.

That gave me enough context to feel comfortable ignoring the message. I liked that I could get more than a possible name, although I didn't treat the result as proof of who'd actually sent it.

This is where I'd be cautious about paying for a whole membership. If you just want to look up one number, a search engine, business website or public caller-reporting directory may answer the question. Spokeo makes more sense when that number is one of several things you need to check.

Reverse Email Lookup and Social Profiles

I was curious about the email search because an address can stay the same even when someone moves or changes their name. Spokeo can connect emails with possible identities and public online profiles, depending on what it has available.

One of my own searches turned up an old Twitter account. The match was useful, but the account was hardly evidence of recent activity. That sums up both the appeal and the limitation of this feature. Finding an old profile can help connect someone to a name or email address, but it doesn't tell you what they're doing online now.

I also wouldn't rely on it to find every private account or dating profile. If an account doesn't appear, that doesn't prove it doesn't exist. If one does appear, you still need to establish whether it belongs to the person you're researching.

Address Lookup

I found address searches helpful when I was already comparing records for a person. A familiar location or an old street address could help me decide which result to open, particularly when names were similar.

The limitation is that people move, and a person listed at an address may have left years ago. Ownership and residence aren't the same thing, either. When I needed to check something important about a property, I preferred the relevant official property record.

Spokeo Android App

Spokeo's Android app is now listed as Spokeo AI. It lets existing subscribers search by name, phone, email or address and revisit recent searches. That's useful if you're away from a computer and want to check something you've already been looking into.

There's an important catch: the Google Play listing says you need an existing subscription to sign in. You can't start a new membership, buy a report or use a free trial inside the app.

The listing describes searches you start yourself. It doesn't promise automatic caller-ID screening for every incoming call. I wouldn't buy Spokeo just for that feature.

Ease of Use

I found Spokeo straightforward on the website. Switching between name, phone, email and address searches was easy, and the reports were divided into sections I could work through without losing my place.

I also used a Windows desktop, an iPad with Safari and an Android phone. The tablet was easier to work through than the smaller phone browser, especially when I was comparing several possible matches. The Android app is convenient for members, but I still preferred more screen space for sorting through records.

My bigger concern wasn't finding the search box. It was knowing what I'd get for the money. A promising preview can make you think the answer is sitting just behind the payment screen, when the full report might still be missing the detail you need.

How Much Does Spokeo Cost?

The $0.95 trial is an easy offer to notice. The monthly charge that follows matters much more.

A 2026 checkout review by Top Consumer Reviews documented a $0.95 full-name report with a seven-day trial, renewing at $29.95 per month unless cancelled. September company responses on the Better Business Bureau also document customers charged $29.95 after introductory purchases. Spokeo sells different offers, and I've also seen customers describe discounted multi-month pricing, so I wouldn't assume one displayed price covers every plan.

I think this is Spokeo's biggest drawback. The service did help me find useful information, but I wouldn't want to keep paying $29.95 every month after my searches were finished. And I certainly wouldn't judge the value by the first 95 cents.

Spokeo's customer-care responses also make clear that searches included in a membership aren't necessarily the same as its separately charged reports and extras. If a particular court record, PDF or enhanced report is the reason you're subscribing, check whether it's included before paying.

How to Cancel Spokeo

You can cancel through the subscription controls in your Spokeo account. After signing in, look for your membership or account settings, follow the cancellation process and keep the confirmation. Spokeo also provides support by phone, email and chat if the account option isn't working.

The company's published cancellation guidance is worth checking before starting a trial. Recent Spokeo customer-care responses confirm that leaving a trial unchanged allows it to renew and that cancelling stops the next renewal, rather than automatically refunding the period you've already paid for.

I'd also make sure you're cancelling the right service if you've purchased an extra report or subscription. Deleting an account, requesting a refund and removing a public listing are different things.

Is Spokeo Safe?

Spokeo didn't give me an obvious reason to distrust the basic website experience, but I have mixed feelings about the amount of personal information that can appear in its reports.

Finding an old address or social account can be useful when you're the person searching. It's less comfortable when you picture someone else looking up the same things about you. And an incorrect match can be a problem even when it comes from an otherwise legitimate service.

The Google Play listing says the Android app encrypts data in transit and provides a way to request deletion. That's useful information about the app, but it doesn't tell us how every record in a people-search report is protected or whether a match is accurate.

I also tried removing a relative's listing. The opt-out was processed and the listing no longer appeared, which was encouraging. Spokeo's removal process can suppress covered results on its own website, but it doesn't erase the public records or remove copies held elsewhere.

Spokeo's 2012 FTC Settlement

There's a regulatory case worth knowing about. In 2012, the US Federal Trade Commission announced an $800,000 settlement over allegations that Spokeo marketed people-search information to employers and recruiters without the safeguards required by the Fair Credit Reporting Act. The FTC also alleged that Spokeo employees posted endorsements that appeared to be independent.

It was an employment-screening and advertising case, not a data breach. It doesn't tell us whether an individual Spokeo report is accurate today, but it's a good reason to take its permitted-use limits seriously. Read the FTC announcement.

My Experience Using Spokeo

Moving between the four search types was straightforward, and the report sections made it easy to return to a detail without losing my place. The tablet gave me more room to compare possible matches than the phone browser. That mattered more to me than how quickly the first results appeared.

The harder part was deciding whether the information deserved my confidence. Familiar ages, locations and relatives helped; a report with plenty of entries could still leave the question unanswered. Opening and reading a report was easy. Sorting out which details belonged together took more attention.

The previews were the part of the paid experience I liked least. I could see a plausible match without knowing whether the full report would contain the detail I needed. Support answered my question about accuracy, but that could not fix an out-of-date record. Spokeo saved some searching, while still leaving me with checking to do.

Who Is Spokeo Best For?

I'd consider Spokeo for reconnecting with someone, checking a few unfamiliar contact details or comparing possible matches from US records. It worked well for me when I knew an old city, age or family connection and could recognise the result.

Personal and Family Searches

An unfamiliar call or text is a sensible reason to look up a number. Spokeo may show useful context, but it can't guarantee that the person named in the result actually contacted you. I wouldn't treat a match as proof that a stranger is safe or that a message asking for money is genuine.

If you're checking on a family member's information, remember that the records can also be out of date. They may help you find someone, but they don't replace speaking to that person or using an official source when something matters.

Business and Formal Screening

Spokeo isn't the right service for hiring, tenant screening, credit or insurance eligibility. Those decisions require appropriate processes and, where applicable, a compliant consumer reporting agency. A personal people-search membership doesn't become a formal screening tool because it happens to show professional or court information.

Spokeo Complaints and Customer Feedback

I think it's worth reading recent customer feedback before using a cheap introductory offer. A number of complaints concern automatic renewal, separately priced extras and disappointment with the information delivered. Other customers describe useful searches and helpful support.

The part I pay most attention to is Spokeo's own responses. The company confirms that trial subscriptions can renew automatically and that some types of reports cost extra. That's more useful than assuming every unhappy customer misunderstood an offer, or that every complaint describes what will happen to you.

Spokeo Alternatives and Competitors

I've had useful results from different people-search services, and I don't think Spokeo needs to be the first choice for every lookup. It was particularly good for the kind of search where an old name, email address or online profile gives you somewhere to start.

If a free directory or public register answers the question, I don't see much reason to pay for Spokeo. If you're trying to narrow down several possible identities or piece together contact and profile information, the convenience is more appealing.

The updated Android app is now listed as Spokeo AI. It gives existing members mobile access to name, phone, email and address searches, as well as recent searches and available profiles. The official listing doesn't describe automatic incoming-call screening, and new subscriptions aren't sold in the app.

I like the option to check a result on the phone, but the new name doesn't change what I'd want from Spokeo: useful, reasonably accurate information at a price that makes sense for the searches I'm doing.

I got some good results from Spokeo, and I liked being able to switch between different searches without hunting around several websites. Finding my college friend was a real success, but other searches were less satisfying. Some records were outdated, and I couldn't always tell whether paying would get me the information I needed.

I've given Spokeo 8.0/10 because it can genuinely save time, especially when you have several people or contact details to look up. But the subscription is harder to justify for an occasional search. At $29.95 a month after the documented introductory offer, I'd want to get plenty of use out of it. For one number or address, I'd check the free options first.
